Hey! So sorry for the lack of posts for the last few days, the internet was out for about 5 days and just came back up today. Lots of catching up to do!
So on Friday, the class schedule was irregular. We only taught first and fifth grade, and for 30 minutes only. the classes actually get out earlier than normal (1130 for 1-3 and 12 for 4th and 5th grade), so we spent a lot of the day just talking with Mary (the supervisor and founder), Tania (the principal), and Juvitsa (the assistant of the school). Every day after school gets out I talk to Carlos (our "chauffer" who takes us to and from school every day along with a few of the kids) and he's really interested in English, and I'm really interested in Spanish! So we basically teach each other our languages (to the best of our ability at least). When we got home, Joe and I and a few other volunteers went into La Ceiba (basically downtown) because they had to get a few things down there, and Joe and I just tagged along because we needed to get money from the bank and also we needed to just get a visual on some important places of the city (grocery store, banks, food places, marketplaces, etc). After that we caught a taxi back to El Porvenir and then we went out to dinner at this restaurant right along the beach where we live. The restaurant had extremely slow service, so that gave us adequate time for some good conversation. I got the Sopa de Pescado (fish soup) which was basically chunks of fish in a fishy broth, but it was so delicious I almost died. I wish you all could try the cuisine down here, it's wonderful! We've gotten a lot of great Honduran things like sliced cucumbers, tomatoes, with cumin and salt sprinkled on top and also something called baleadas, which is basically a fatty tortilla with beans (or egg) and sour cream inside. Buen Provecho! After the restaurant, we went back to the place and played Catch Phrase with a few friends before bed...early day comin up!
On Saturday, we woke up early and had to leave by 6 because we were going to Cayos Cochinos! We met a few of the other volunteers who were going with us, one from Ireland, two from England, one from Spain, and one from France. It was an awesome experience getting to know the people from all of these places! We took a boat out to the islands, got there around 11 and the first thing we did was eat lunch at this restaurant that served basically just a whole breaded fish in a coconut milk broth seasoned with a few spices. The taste was amazing to say the least. After that, we took the boat to another island where we were going to stay. For only $5 a night, we basically had a whole island to ourselves. It was ridiculously awesome. We stayed basically in the attic of this house where there were 3 double beds inside and 2 singles outside. After we checked out where we were going to stay that night, we took the boat to our snorkleing spot on ANOTHER island where there were a whole bunch of coral reefs with tons of fish, sea cucumbers, sea urchins, and so many other animals I cant even begin to describe. I saw a HUGE stingray, an 8 foot long fish and this beautiful spotted cobalt blue fish that was just chillin in the coral reef. When we were done snorkeling, we went back to the other island and had dinner which consisted of a few small fat tortillas, a pile of beans, some sour cream, and eggs. It was the perfect taste and perfect amount of food that I needed after an awesome day on the islands. We then went back to the island we were staying on and chatted for a while over a few drinks and then went to sleep for the night in our beds in the attic. Sunday we woke up and snorkled near the hotel for about an hour and then left for La Ceiba and El Porvenir at 11. The rest of the day we just hung out, relaxed, and prepared for another week of waking up at 5AM!
Oh also, my camera got some water in it when we were going out to the islands and now the mechanism for the lens is broken :( no more photos from my camera this trip :(
