Hey everyone! So this weekend we had no plans to travel anywhere in Honduras, so we just stayed in Porvenir and Ceiba. Katlyn's birthday was actually on Thursday and Shawna's was on Friday, so on Friday night we celebrated their birthday by goin out to dinner and then going into La Ceiba to experience some of the night life. Some people had a few too many drinks...but don't worry it wasn't me! I ended up going back early with a few people and crashing because we were all super tired from the week. On Saturday we got up later than normal (late night before) and went to the beach for a lot of the day. OH and I forgot to say...I had my first jellyfish experience on Thursday night. Apparently the jellyfish show up near the beach around 5:30 at night, and me and Joe were out just throwin around the frisbee in the water when all of the sudden I felt this line of straight STING across my leg. I ran out of the water as fast as possible and tried to wipe the barbs off my leg with sand so it wouldn't sting my hand. Meanwhile, Joe was running through the water lifting his legs super high because he knew I was just stung, and then I hear him scream and then start limping through the water. Apparently he got stung coming in too! Fortunately they weren't poisonous or anything, and I guess it's true that where there's one jellyfish, there's many! But it was definitely an interesting experience! I'm wondering what my next encounter in the beach water is going to be...first it was a sharp, broken, rusty metal pipe I stepped on, then it was jellyfish, and next...shark? I don't know, but I'm curious/scared to find out. Nonetheless, it won't stop me from going in the lovely water behind our place. It's so beautiful there.
On Saturday we all spent most of the day at the beach: swimming, exploring, just chillin really. Really laid back and relaxing day. At night we gathered up some firewood to have a bonfire which was actually a lot harder than we expected because it was very scarce and hard to find. I ended up dragging this huge (probably 100 pound) tree trunk probably 200 feet to the pit. Once we got the fire going we all just sat around, told stories, played some guitar and of course played some typical campfire games. We all ended up leaving the bonfire a little early...mainly because there were 2 cocaine drug deals going on probably 100 feet from our pit. Apparently right behind the beach house is where a lot of drug deals go down. I'd say we see on average 3 or 4 per day. But no need to worry, every possible entrance and exit to the beach house is literally fortified with one inch iron bars so nobody can get in. Once we came in, we got on the topic of ghosts and scary stories so we all scared the cripes out of each other with our own scary stories. To finish the night on a lighter note though, we watched a few episodes of Friends before we went to bed.
Today (Sunday) Joe, Julie and I went into La Ceiba for groceries and a few things we needed to get at the mall. We caught a cab in, but the cab ride was sketchy as hell. Guy was drivin like a psycho, and he ended up running into another cab that was turning left across the road, but luckily we were only going a few miles an hour so no harm was done to anything (including ourselves). When we finally arrived after our 30 minutes of peril, went into the mall to get some cash first before we went to get other things. I stuck my card in and guess what it said? "This card is no longer active". Stupid me forgot to pick up the new debit card I ordered before I left the US, so I had a temporary card that would only last for 30 days, and apparently today was day 31. So in order to take money out, I had to go up and pay to use the internet cafe, transfer money to Joe's account, and then I had to have him withdraw it with his card. We're going to have to do that for the rest of the trip I'm pretty sure. So we spent most of the day walking through the mall, trying to find a travel adapter for her electronics (she's from Norway) and also looking for a new camera for myself. Looks like I'm going to be buying a cheap camera later on this week that I can probably just sell when I get back to the states or something. So looks like there will be more photos to come after all! After the mall we went to the grocery store to stock up for the week, and I'm so glad that everything at THIS grocery store was cheap. The first day we went to town, the grocery store we went to was ridiculously expensive (I think we spent around $150...), but the one we went to today was super cheap. Basically everyone from the house had a list of things for us to get for them, so we were running around the store, trying to figure out what certain things were, what our friends wanted, and separate all the transactions at the same time. We eventually got it figured out though (after a while) and then headed back home with a crapload of groceries! Something I love about Honduras is that every day is a new experience, and you learn how to live with the way of life here no matter how different it might seem.
haha I'm jelly! ba-doom-bish!
